Jaw-in-a-Day (JIAD) is an advanced surgical technique used to reconstruct the mandible (lower jaw) in a single, coordinated procedure. Traditionally, mandible reconstruction required multiple surgeries spread over months or years. Jaw-in-a-Day is designed for patients who need part of their jawbone removed, often due to tumors, trauma, or severe infection. This innovative approach allows for removal and reconstruction of the jaw, placement of dental implants, and creation of a new smile, all in one surgery.

Who Needs Mandible Reconstruction?

Jaw-in-a-Day is typically offered to patients undergoing surgery for:

  • Mandibular Tumors or Cancer: Removal of malignant or benign tumors affecting the lower jaw.
  • Osteoradionecrosis: Jawbone death resulting from prior radiation treatment for head and neck cancer.
  • Severe Trauma or Infection: When the jaw is damaged beyond repair.
  • Congenital Deformities: Rarely, patients with complex jaw abnormalities may be candidates.

How Jaw-in-a-Day Works

This highly specialized procedure involves:

  • Pre-Surgical Planning: A team of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgeons, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons (OMFS), and a Prosthodontist work together using 3D imaging and virtual surgical planning. A custom 3D model of your jaw and fibula bone (from your lower leg) is created to plan bone reconstruction and implant placement precisely.
  • Mandibulectomy & Reconstruction: The affected portion of the jaw is removed (mandibulectomy). Bone from your fibula is shaped and transferred to reconstruct your jaw. This bone maintains its own blood supply through microvascular free flap surgery for optimal healing and strength.2) Mandibulectomy & Reconstruction: The affected portion of the jaw is removed (mandibulectomy). • Dental Implant Placement: Dental implants are placed into the fibula bone during the same operation, guided by the digital surgical plan.
  • Immediate Prosthesis (“Teeth-in-a-Day”): A temporary dental bridge or prosthesis may be attached to the implants right away — giving you a functional and aesthetic smile much sooner than traditional methods.
  • After a period of healing, your prosthodontist makes custom impressions, removes the temporary prosthesis, and fits a permanent dental prosthesis.

A Collaborative Approach

Jaw-in-a-Day surgery requires close coordination between head and neck surgeons, microvascular reconstructive surgeons, maxillofacial prosthodontists, and dental specialists. It is performed at high-volume academic centers with extensive experience in complex facial reconstruction.

Is It Right for You?

This procedure is best suited for patients who need mandible removal due to cancer or other destructive conditions and are healthy enough for free flap reconstruction. A detailed evaluation, including imaging, medical clearance, and prosthodontic consultation, is necessary to determine eligibility. For those who qualify, Jaw-in-a-Day offers a life-changing opportunity for immediate jaw and dental restoration.
